Join us for Grammar 101 where you will not only learn the important basics of grammar, but you will actually have some fun with it! Impossible you say? Well, come join us and brush up on those all important skills that can make or break how you are perceived in your job or career.

Grammar 101 is one of four courses in the Writing Learning Centre's Business Certificate Program. Take it as part of the series, or as a stand-alone course.

Course Outline

Lesson 1: Why is Grammar Important?

  • A look at the importance of quality communication in the business world today.

Lesson 2: Parts of Speech

  • Learn the different parts of speech and how to identify them in a sentence.

Lesson 3: Parts of Sentences

  • Learn to dissect sentences and understand the role of each component.

Lesson 4: Sentence Types and Word Order

  • Identify sentence types and how to construct them using proper word construction.

Lesson 5: Punctuation

  • Colon? Semicolon? Period? You'll learn what to use when.

Lesson 6: Mechanics

  • Study and practice the elementary rules of usage in The Elements of Style

Lesson 6: The Elements of Style

  • Bring it all together with this classic writing advice from Strunk & White's book.

Instructor Bio

Mary Anne has been teaching at St. John Fisher College in both graduate and undergraduate programs for the past nine years, with a specialty in business, technical and professional communications. In addition, she is the Chief Editor of Writer Online, a professional ezine for writers and lovers of writing.

Mary Anne has over twenty years experience in corporate and business communications including technical writing, instructional design, marketing communications and internet instructional design, serving in both corporate staff functions as well as an independent contractor and consultant for national firms including Kodak, Xerox, Metropolitan Life, Motorola, and others.

As a writer and author, Mary Anne has also published numerous articles in publications including Workforce magazine, Rochester Business Journal, Building Operating Management, Equus, Equine Journal, and Writer's Digest. She has written two books: Zen and the Art of Horseback Riding, and coauthored Retraining the Harness Racehorse. Mary Anne is finishing her master's degree in liberal studies with a concentration in digital virtual literacy from Empire State College.
